1 Corinthians 12:1

Now concerning spiritual (gifts), brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Ignorant of what?
The gifts or the purpose of the gifts?
Apostle Paul had spoken about this earlier…

1 Corinthians 1

6. Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
7. So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ…

They came behind in no gift implies that they were seen manifesting the gifts. They were not ignorant of the gifts. They knew they had the gifts. Their ignorance therefore, would be the purpose to which the gifts were given as we see Apostle Paul explain here…

1 Corinthians 12

4. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

The New Living Translation renders verse 7 this way, “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” Apt!
The purpose of the gifts of the Spirit is not for showmanship, but for edification in fellowship. It is for the edification of the body of Christ. This is what they didn’t know. This was definitely their ignorance.
When we fellowship with the brethren, we are supposed to be edified by the gifts of the Spirit deposited in each one of us. We are supposed to be better than we came.
Some are out there peddling the gifts of the Spirit; they are making money out of their fellow brethren. Wrong! Such people may know they have the gifts but have failed to know the purpose of the gifts.
“A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other” (1 Cor. 12:7 NLT).
This is the purpose of the gifts of the Spirit in you; that you may help, that is, edify–make better your brother or sister in the faith.

1 Corinthians 14:26

How is it then, brethren? When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

All things, including the gifts of the Spirit, are to be done onto edifying. No room for showmanship. It is not StarQest. It is the edification of the Saints of God. No man takes this glory. Glory to Jesus!
Apostle Paul, using the body and its many parts, explains this…

1 Corinthians 12

12. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also (is) Christ.
13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether (we be) Jews or Gentiles, whether (we be) bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
14. For the body is not one member, but many…
25. That there should be no schism in the body; but (that) the members should have the same care one for another.
26. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
27. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

The gifts are given to every member for the caring of the members of the body of Christ. No one can monopolize the gifts; they’re to all and for all.
The Pastor should not be the only one manifesting the gifts of the Spirit in the local church. He alone does not constitute the body of Christ. “We” makes the body, not “I”.
It gives me joy to see believers manifest the gifts of the Spirit in them for the purpose of edification.
Selfishness in the church dies when men know that the gifts given are not for self but for all.
Every time you refuse to yield to the Spirit in manifesting the gifts, you deprive the body of Christ edification. And every time you think of putting up a show with the gifts, you only put ignorance (of the gifts’ purpose) on display.

We all profit withal when our gifts edify one another.

You are blessed!
